TALIS Plus help: Searching

Search

Basic searching

Words

To search for multiple words, separate them with spaces. You can search on any combination of words from the author, title, subject, format, etc.

Examples:

Some words you search for may automatically search for variations, e.g. swim may also find results for swimming and swimmers.

Phrases

To search for an exact phrase only, surround it with double quotation marks.

Example:

Refining your search

When you search for something, TALIS Plus looks at all your results and organises them into folders for you. You can use these folders to easily narrow down your results without having to enter more search terms.

Example:

There are many different folder types for you to use to refine your search - they include Language, Time period, Region, Genre, Topic, Author and so on. You can keep on narrowing your search results down using the different folder options until you find the items you want. Note: options will only display if they will refine your current results.

What is 'Your search so far'?

Your search so far at the top left of the results pages shows your pathway to your current results list. It shows the search terms you entered and the browsing choices you made.

You can remove a term by clicking on the red cross () next to it. The results page will update to reflect the removal of that term.

Example:

You may decide that you want to see all lending videos, not just the gardening ones:

Sorting

You can sort by Relevance, Title, Date or Popularity

Want to know what's popular with our library users? Choose your favourite category e.g. Crime, then sort by popularity.

Advanced searching

Including and excluding search terms

Searches are "AND" searches - results returned will contain all words and phrases you specified. Currently there is no way to perform an "OR" search.

Example:

A minus sign (-) immediately preceding a search term (word or phrase) excludes items containing the term. Using "NOT" also excludes terms.

Example:

Field searches

You can search specific fields in a catalogue record e.g. author or title. Type in the fieldname:keyword combination that you want. Do not add a space before or after the colon.

Example:

You can use the following fieldnames:

If you enter a minus sign (-) immediately proceeding a field, such as -fieldname:keyword, items containing the specified term will be excluded from the search results.

Example:

The fieldname refers only to the word immediately following it, not to any further following words.

Rules applied to search keywords

Various rules are applied to your search keywords which may affect your results:
